The UTEP softball team came up short, 6-5, against New Mexico in game one after junior Colleen Hohman blasted a two-run shot to right field to tie the game for the Miners (12-30) in the top of the seventh. Game two, the Lobos (21-29) scored all their runs in the first inning coming out on the winning end, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Lobo Field.
The Miners rallied in the seventh with the score 5-3. Sophomore Tahla Wade singled up the middle to begin the inning. Hohman came in to pinch hit for junior Kayla Black and hit her second long ball of the season. But the Lobos answered with a rally of their own and won the game in the home half of the inning.
Junior Alanna Leasau continued her solid first season in the Orange and Blue. The Livermore, Calif. native hit her eighth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field to give her squad an early 3-1 lead in the third.
Freshman Danielle Pearson finished a conference-leading 16th game (6.1 innings) and struck out five Lobos with no walks.
New Mexico scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Junior Erika Arcuri went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Leasau knocked in her 39th run of the season. Both transfers are amongst conference leaders, Arcuri in hitting (.352) and Leasau in RBI.
The Miners return to Helen of Troy Softball Complex on Saturday, April 27 to close out the home season against No. 24 Tulsa in a three-game weekend series. This will be the final home series for seniors Ashley Collazo, Charissa Ballesteros, Kayla Oranger, Cynthia Villastrigo, and Kayleigh Walts. The weekend festivities will include free admission, food specials and free orange pom-poms.
Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. MT; while Sunday’s final home game is slated for Noon MT.
