The UTEP and New Mexico softball programs will take a break from conferenceaction, as the two rivals will face each other in a two-game series on Wednesday in Albuquerque.
The Miners (12-28) and Lobos (19-29) game one first pitch is set for Noon MT.
Both programs are coming off a tough weekend where both were swept. Conference USA leader UAB burned UTEP in Birmingham, Ala., while NewMexico was dealt a bad hand by Nevada in Albuquerque.
Junior Alanna Leasau is coming off a solid weekend where she hit .500 with two RBI and two doubles. Leasau is one of the conference leaders in RBI (35) and home runs (seven). Junior Erika Arcuri is the team leader in batting (.342) and runs scored (23). Senior catcher Kayleigh Walts has hit three dingers and is second on the squad in RBI (19). Walts is one of the conference leaders behind the plate. Her 23 runners caught stealing ranks first, while her six runners caught ‘napping’ ranks second.
Walts’ senior season has propelled her into the UTEP career record books. The native of Flower Mound, Texas now holds the school record for runners caught stealing (58) and picking runners off (13).
Cassandra Kalapsa, Mariah Rimmer and Naomi Tellez have each amassed 18 RBI to lead the Lobos, while Kalapsa leads the squad with six long balls.
The Miners will return to conference action on April 27 and 28 against Tulsa in the final home series of the season.
