The UTEP softball team is set to take the field against Houston for a Saturday doubleheader (2 p.m. MT) in Conference USA action at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.
The Miners (12-22, 1-10 C-USA) currently sit in the eight spot in the conference standings, while the Cougars (26-12, 9-3 C-USA) are in third place behind UAB and Tulsa. C-USA takes eight of the nine teams for the post-season tournament. Southern Miss is in the cellar to begin the weekend.
UTEP came off a tough weekend where they were swept by UCF. Game three of the series was definitely the heartbreaker. The Miners put up two runs in the top of the 11th, but lost on a walk-off grand slam, 4-2.
The Cougars came off a win against Jackson State, 3-2, in non-conference action. Marshall won two of three against Houston in its last conference series.
Junior Erika Arcuri has been solid at the dish in her first season donning the Orange and Blue. Her .363 batting average ranks sixth inconference and first on the team. Arcuri’s five strikeouts is ranked 54th in the nation in toughest to strikeout. UTEP’s team batting average is ranked fourth in conference (.271).
The Cougars’ Haley Outon has been dominant this season. Outon ranks first in home runs (10), slugging percentage (.755), on base percentage (.511), and walks (33). She also ranks second in RBI (32) and tenth in batting average (.347). Houston’s team batting average ranks second (.286) as Katie St. Pierre ranks second (.390) and Holly Anderson is ranked fourth (.368).
In the circle, Houston’s Bailey Watts ranks fifth in ERA (2.08) and ranks third in wins (14) in 117.2 innings. Freshman Danielle Pearson has been the workhorse for the Miners as she has thrown 117.1 innings and leads her squad with six wins.
