EL PASO — A large fire ripped through a Northeast self-storage Sunday afternoon causing several thousand dollars in damage.
About 50 El Paso firefighters responded to to the Smart Stop Self-Storage near the intersection of Dyer and Rutherford.
"I think they had it under control very quick from what I saw," said Petra Luoma, a business owner across the from the storage units. "As soon as the fire department came it was under control pretty quick."
The fire department said it took about 40 minutes to contain the fire but there was damage to 10 individual units with everything inside described as a total loss, according to the fire department.
The department said the fire was small when they first arrived but spread to other units after they had difficulties gaining access to the locked units.
"With the resources needed to gain access we had to upgrade to a condition four to get more firefighters out here," said Battalion Chief Matt Hiett.
Hiett said the cause of the fire is still undetermined and remains under investigation.
