EL PASO — Some unemployed El Pasoans may soon be out of a home. Significant budget cuts to a national housing program are displacing 100 families in El Paso.
According to the El Paso Housing Authority, dozens of families will be dropped from the Housing Choice Voucher Program, also known as section 8 housing, starting March 31.
Letters were sent out on the first of this month to notify residents of the change. The cut will only affect those who have lived in housing for at least 20 years. The elderly and disabled are exempt.
Although families will be dropped from section 8 housing, the El Paso Housing Authority said they will have the option to be transferred to public housing instead.
So far, 90 of those 100 families have been set up with these new accomodations.
