EL PASO — A protest group Wednesday marched four blocks through downtown El Paso to the offices of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. They want the TCEQ to order more testing of the Asarco copper smelting site before the towers there come down in an implosion scheduled for April 13.
They ran into a counter demonstration group that arrived to insist the implosion will be safe and not spread contaminants into the soil or into the nearby Rio Grande. That led to a shouting match between the two groups.
Lorinda Gardner, Regional Director of TCEQ, met the marchers outside her building to say she would take the group's concerns "under advisement" and give them the answers to the environmental concerns they have.
