Las Cruces, N.M. — A Doña Ana County mother arrested nearly three years ago for allegedly beating her son with a horse whip pleaded guilty Monday in court.
In June 2010, investigators said Sherri Mazzola admitted to neighbors that she beat her then 13-year-old son with the whip, a broom and the plastic top of a spray can over a two day period after he failed to clean the bathroom within five minutes.
A presentencing report will be presented to the Judge. It could take up to 6 weeks before she is sentenced.
Mazzola faces up to 3 years in prison for third degree child abuse.
Her son is now living with other family outside of New Mexico.
