EL PASO — Former El Paso mayor Raymond Telles passed away Friday morning according to his daughter, Cynthia Ann Telles. He was 97 and living in California at the time of his death.
"He kept asking to go back to El Paso, always asking me to come back," Telles' daughter said. "He was too ill."
Telles was the first Hispanic mayor of a major U.S. city. President John F. Kennedy eventually appointed him to be the Costa Rican ambassador.
"He was one of the most famous former mayors we have in El Paso," said El Paso Mayor John Cook.
Services and mass will be in El Paso.
