LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State Police are still settling into their new building on the East Mesa.
The nearly $6 million building at 4055 Sonoma Ranch Boulevard is considerably larger than the old rundown University Avenue location and will help police provide better services for citizens.
"I honestly do not miss the old building," said Lt. James Frietze.
Apart from the size difference, the building will have holding rooms and a booking area the old facility lacked.
Detainees were handcuffed to a bar bolted on the wall and were mixed with both men and women.
The building is also equipped with enough work stations and computers so officers don't have to share like they did before.
The second wing of the building will house the criminal division, which is currently at an off-site location.
"They now have access to those detectives here," Frietze said.
When a report was filed with a patrol officer at the old building, it would have to be approved by a supervisor then transferred to the criminal bureau which could take days.
The full transition to the new building is still a work in progress.
State Police want people to know they are no longer operating at the University location and are now taking reports at the new building.
