LAS CRUCES — Las Cruces Police arrested a man who led them on a vehicle and foot pursuit through a residential neighborhood Monday evening.
Ruben J. Trujillo, 25, was charged with one count each of aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, driving while under the influence of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
At around 10 p.m. Monday, March 4, a Las Cruces Police officer traveling westbound on Picacho Avenue observed as a BMW sedan entered the roadway and cut off another vehicle that was also traveling west.
The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the BMW but its driver, later identified as Trujillo, accelerated and led police in a vehicle pursuit.
Trujillo attempted to elude police on several residential roadways north and south of Picacho Avenue, and between Alameda Boulevard and Valley Drive. Trujillo's BMW reached speeds up to 60 miles per hour on residential roadways during the pursuit.
On the 500 block of north Melendres Street Trujillo jumped out of the BMW as it continued moving. The BMW came to a stop after it struck a fence while Trujillo led officers on a foot pursuit northbound and through several residential yards.
Officers eventually caught up with Trujillo and took him into custody. During an inventory search of his vehicle officers discovered various items consistent with drug paraphernalia. Police also determined that Trujillo used heroin earlier in the day.
Trujillo was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $6,000.
