EL PASO — Jesse Torres and his family like where they live now, but the apartment complex they came from was a nightmare. Torres says he had to have maintenance come out "20 times in one month" to try and fix his air conditioning. The sink disposal was also broken with no help from the landlord.
Until today, Torres had no real understanding that house and apartment renters have rights under the law, to resolve maintenance issues and other complaints.
The El Paso office of the Better Business Bureau rates or grades every apartment complex, carefully recording the kinds of complaints a complex receives and whether the management is quick to resolve issues. The BBB site is one resource to help renters, even before they sign a lease.
