It was a special day for a native El Pasoan in the Army. Staff Sgt. Juan Carbajal received a Purple Heart Medal 6 years after surviving a brain injury in war.
Staff Sgt. Carbajal's family watched from the front row as Major General Dana Pittard presented him with the medal this afternoon on Fort Bliss.
The medal is for a mild traumatic brain injury Carbajal suffered in a roadside bomb blast in Iraq.
Carbajal says he feels like a very lucky Purple Heart recipient. "Not many of us have it down here. There's a lot of people who have been wounded and who have received the award and a lot of people who have passed away and have had an award, but to actually have one and survive, it's a blessing," said Carbajal.
The Purple Heart Medal is awarded to American soldiers wounded or killed in battle.
