One of the suspects in the 1977 murder of Major Chester Garrett was a speech teacher at Eastwood High school from 1984 to 2005, according to a spokesperson from Ysleta Independent School District.
Former educator Lisbeth Ann Garrett, 74, was taken into custody in connection to the murder of the Major, Sheriff's investigators said. She was the estranged wife of Major Garrett.
On Thursday, detectives traveled to Knoxville, Tenn. with the assistance of the Knoxville Police Department and arrested 54-year-old Roger Evan Garrett on murder charges with a $5M bond. Investigators said Roger Evan Garrett was the step-son of Major Garrett.
According to investigators, in January of 1977 Major Garrett, a highly decorated United States Army Officer assigned to Fort Bliss, was found dead in El Paso. The investigation became inactive as all leads were exhausted at the time. In 2006, the Sheriff’s Office resumed the investigation and continued the case developing new information.
