Discarded chewing gum is a sticky problem for people living in Mexico City. Mexico is the second largest consumer of gum in the world. On average, people in Mexico chew three pieces of gum each day, and many of them throw that gum away on the street.
According to research, it takes about four to five years for one piece of discarded gum to degrade. One Mexican lawmaker has proposed a higher tax on gum, another suggested fining people who throw away their gum in public places.
