TORNILLO, TX — El Paso Sheriff's Deputies shot a pit bull after the animal attacked a 67-year-old woman and bit off the woman's thumb.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon in the 500 block of Little Apalooza in Tornillo, Texas.
According to Angelica Becerra, spokesperson for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the victim reached for something that was near the pit bull's litter of 5-week-old puppies, and that is when the pit bull attacked her.
Becerra said part of the woman's left thumb was bitten off, and she also received several cuts on her arm. Deputies recovered the woman's partial thumb and rushed the woman to the hospital where doctors were going to try to reattach it.
Deputies said the loose dog charged at a Deputy on the scene, and that Deputy fired his gun, striking the dog. The gunshot did not kill the dog, but it was later put down.
Becerra said the victim's grandson is the owner of the pit bull.
