The New Mexico State men's tennis team opens the 2013 spring season at home against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday, Jan. 19. The team opens the spring season against the Islanders for the fourth straight season.
The Aggies are 3-1 in recent years against the Islanders, but fell in the season opener in 2012 4-3 in Las Cruces. The Aggies finished the 2012 spring season with an 8-15 overall record while going 2-3 in Western Athletic Conference play.
"I'm glad to get the team on the court to compete," head coach Carlos Vargas said. "We have a full team this year, so they have to fight for their spots, and I think that is bringing out some great competition. I am seeing what I'd like from the team at this point and this weekend will help me set a solid lineup for the year."
During the fall tournament season, freshmen Daniel Fernandez and Naveen Manivannan proved to be solid contributors to the team and the duo claimed the Balloon Fiesta Invitational title in their respective flight. The pair defeated fellow Aggies, senior Luis Ramirez and junior Marc Westgate, 8-5, en route to the crown.
The Aggies return four players to the court this season, led by lone senior Luis Ramirez. The senior finished 2012 with a 12-11 singles record and teamed up with Matej Stakne for a 6-6 doubles record last year. Sophomore Germain Degardin lead the Aggies during the 2012 dual season with a 13-9 singles record playing mainly at the third and fourth poisition.
The dual is set for the Aggie Tennis Center beginning with dual competition at 1 p.m., followed by the singles matches.
