Las Cruces, N.M. — New Mexico finds itself on the back end of a list ranking states with the highest rate of cigarette smuggling.
According to a study, New Mexico is the third highest in the nation for smuggling cigarettes.
The study done by the Tax Foundation found more than half of the cigarettes smoked in New Mexico were smuggled illegally.
The study group said a lot of the cigarettes smuggled in come from Mexico, but they also come from other states that have lower taxes.
Since 2006, New Mexico's cigarette tax has almost doubled.
