EL PASO — A 21-year-old female victim was recovering at University Medical Center after police said her former common-law husband stabbed her in the head and chest inside her apartment.
Rafael Gomez, 22, entered her apartment when an argument ensued between the two and escalated to the stabbing, investigators said.
The victim attempted to call 911 but Gomez knocked the phone away. She was able to scream for help causing Gomez to flee the apartment. Officers said they located him Wednesday morning a short distance away.
He now faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and interference with emergency communication.
The investigation revealed Gomez also had warrants for criminal trespass, criminal mischief, and assault causing bodily injury. He was booked into the El Paso county jail.
