EL PASO, Texas — When the players from the University of Southern California and Georgia Tech arrived at El Paso International Airport on Wednesday, they were greeted by mariachis.
But they might not have known there was one man there who's been welcoming teams to El Paso by performing mariachi for them as soon as their feet hit the floor for nearly three decades.
Every year the teams change, the players change, but the man who welcomes them to El Paso stays the same.
Henry Lopez greets the Sun bowl teams each year.
"I thought it was for one year," said Henry Lopez. "Now it's 29 years later and I'm still here".
He's here by mistake. Jimmy Rogers Jr. was responsible for hiring the mariachis. He mistook Henry for another man. Once at the airport, Henry impressed them.
"The reason they liked it is because I took the coach out and danced with him and they thought it was cute," Henry said.
