El Paso, TX — Whether it's the holiday spirit or a last minute tax deduction, charitable giving tends to go up this time of year.
The Better Business Bureau has plenty of advice on its website about charitable giving. You can check out a charity online. There are more than 10,000 listed at this website: give.org.
Beware of unsolicited emails, texts or phone calls.
"Once you've made up your mind of where you want to give, don't give cash. Use your credit card, use a personal check, but don't make it out to anyone other than the charity, not to any individuals," Claire Rosensweig of the BBB says.
And it's not just Attorney General who needs to sign off. Non-profits need certification from the IRS, which takes several months. If you're planning to give to Sandy Relief, there's a list of accredited charities at give.org.
