At approximately 6:21 p.m on Saturday, fire crews were dispatched to I-10 and Sunland Park Drive after several reports of a semi truck on fire were reported to 911.
Upon arrival, fire crews saw heavy smoke and large flames coming from a semi truck carrying a large load of rolled hay.
Investigation revealed that a spark ignited the hay after the truck’s axle broke and the left rear wheel came off.
The underside of the semi truck was not fully enclosed which is how the sparks were able to catch the hay on fire.
The West Valley Fire Department assisted with extinguishing the fire, which took crews over three hours to control due to the large fire load and small pockets of fire the rolled hay created.
Approximately seven EPFD fire units and 19 firefighters responded to the incident.
EPFD cleared the scene after 1 am this morning.
