El Paso Police Department spokesman Detective Mike Baranyay confirms that Officer Angel Garcia, 27, died early this morning trying to remove a ladder from the road on I-10 East near Hawkins.
The crash happened around 7:15 a.m. Sunday. Baranyay said Garcia responded to a call of a traffic hazard, he stopped his patrol car on a lane of traffic and turned on his emergency lights.
A chain reaction between 4 cars caused a collision between a semi-truck, Ford Explorer, Hyundai Elantra and the patrol car.
Police are still investigating which vehicle hit Garcia but he was transported to Del Sol Medical Center where he died.
Officer Garcia had graduated from the El Paso Police Academy in March and worked for the Mission Valley Regional Command Center.
Two people in the Ford Explorer were also transported to Del Sol Medical Center with non-threatening injuries.
Special Traffic Investigation Units are at the scene.
I-10 East at Hawkins has since reopened.
Police are also looking for the person who left the ladder. If you have any information call El Paso Crime Stoppers at 832-4400 or 566-TIPS (8477).
