NM Drivers License May Not Work in New Year
New Mexico — In a little more than a month, New Mexico Drivers licenses will not work as a form of identification if the state doesn't repeal a 2003 law.
The nation's Real ID Act is scheduled to go into effect January 15th and New Mexico is not in compliance with the Federal Law because the state issues licenses to illegal immigrants.
Governor Susana Martinez wrote the Department of Homeland Security in hopes of receiving an extension while the legislature meets in January and introduces bills to change the process required to get a driver's license.
If the state is not granted an extension, New Mexico Drivers licenses will not work to get aboard planes and inside federal laboratories. Bills to repeal the current law have failed to pass during the last two legislative sessions.
