EL PASO — A 60-year-old man was killed in the Lower Valley last night.
El Paso Police Department say it happened after 11 pm on Zaragoza and Cemetery Road. 60 year old Mario Luna was on the roadway on the southbound lanes. At that same time, a truck and the 1999 Chevrolet Venture were traveling south bound on Zaragoza. The driver of the truck observed something on the roadway and switched lanes. At that time the driver of the Venture, 30 year old, Brenda Luna was unable to stop in time and struck the pedestrian.
The woman told police she didn't have time to react and could not avoid hitting Luna.
Police say the driver was cooperative and there is no type of criminal element involved on the driver's part.
"There is not any type of crosswalk and it doesn't appear that he was crossing at any type of intersection or corner at this time. But once we get a little bit further on in the investigation, we might be able to determine where the actual point of impact was where the pedestrian was struck." Officer Javier Zambrano says.
Any alcohol involvement on the part of the pedestrian will have to await toxicology reports.
This is also considered the 20th pedestrian death for 2012.
