EL PASO — After a year and one month extension, it appear the iconic Asarco Smokestacks will be torn down.
The trustee of the old smeltering site, Roberto Puga, tells NewsChannel9 he will make a decision after tomorrow's deadline, however he says,"it appears unlikely that a workable plan is feasible."
City Councilors rejected taking on responsibility for the site last week, which was one of Puga's stipulations for keeping the stacks up (finding owner for site.) The other being proof the stacks are not a safety liability.
The group "Save The Stacks" presented a report to the trust they thought did just that. But the pricetag was too steep for city councilors to make taxpayers pay for it.
