EL PASO — The El Paso Police Department said they received complaints from citizens who are reporting scams.
They said current scam involves El Pasoans receiving a phone call from a person in Mexico claiming to be a family member. This person in Mexico claims to be in need of money, possibly related to an emergency or accident of some type. The El Pasoan then wires money to Mexico believing they are helping a family member, and only later do the victims find out they have been scammed.
Citizens are urged to make every reasonable attempt to verify the accuracy of information before sending money to anyone. If anyone believes they may have been victimized by this or any other scam they are asked to contact the El Paso Police Department at 915-832-4400.
