UTEP put together a 17-0 run that was wrapped around halftime and never let Pacific-12 member Arizona back into the game on the way to posting a 64-53 victory at the Junkanoo Jam Friday evening.
The surge spanned 10:46, including the first two minutes of the second half. When it concluded, the Miners (5-0) led 30-17 with 18:13 to play and the Wildcats (3-2) never got closer than seven (60-53, 44 seconds left) the rest of the way out.
With the result UTEP stays perfected on the campaign while also notching a second signature victory against a power conference opponent in a span of less than one week. The Orange and Blue toppled another Pac-12 school (ASU, 60-54, Nov. 18). Three of the five wins all time in program history against a school in a power league (at time of meeting) have come in the Keitha Adams era, including two already this year.
Anete Steinberga paced a quartet of Miners in double figures with 18 points. Kayla Thornton (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Chrishuana Parker (10 points, 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles and Kelli Willingham added 11 points for UTEP,
The Miners kept ASU to 31 percent shooting while also 25 turnovers allowing them to post a comfortable margin of win. UTEP finished at 42.9 percent (24-of-56), aided by a crisp 54.5 percent (12-of-25) in the second stanza. The Miners shared the ball well with 19 assists, with six from Parker, five from Willingham, four from Thornton and a trio courtesy of Irene Gari.
UTEP had a slight edge in the rebounding battle (39-36) while also enjoying an advantage in points in the paint (20-12). The Wildcats were led by 19 points from Davellyn White while getting 10 from Erica Barnes and nine by Kama Griffits.
UTEP will continue its campaign when it plays at NM State at 7p.m. MST Wednesday, Nov. 28.
