The New Mexico State women's basketball team fell 60-37 on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. The loss brings NM State to 1-2 on the season, heading into the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic on Friday.
The Lobos took advantage of the points off turnovers in the win over NM State with 19. The Aggies finished the night with similar numbers to New Mexico, but assistant coach Tamera Inuoe said the team just could not find the basket.
"We were getting the shots we wanted," Inuoe said. "We just need to pass the ball and really work on those shots. Statistically, we were very matched tonight. The missed shots is a trend that carried over from last week."
The first half opened up with the Lobos taking a 4-0 lead, but sophomore Danesia Williamson downed her first two of 10 baskets of the night. With the Aggies keeping with just those for points until near the nine minute mark, freshman Sasha Weber brought the Aggies back in the game and NM State left the hardwood with 27-20 at the half.
NM State earned the first points of the second half, but struggled to find the basket. A pair of good free throws by senior Kelsie Rozendaal early in the period along with a bucket by Elena Holguin helped move the score for NM State. The Aggies collected a few more points with a layup by sophomore Simone Ruedin and a free basket by Williamson in the middle of the period.
Kelsie Rozendaal combined for seven points and six rebounds on the night, but was 2-for-5 on field goals. Williams and Stefanie Gilbreath each had 10 buckets on the night, going 4-for-16 and 4-for-15, respectively.
"We just need to get back in the gym and shoot. It's that simple," Inuoe said of the Aggies heading into the weekend tournament.
The Aggies collected 44 rebounds on the evening with six assists and two blocks. The Lobos were quite similar to NM State with 43 boards, but tallied 16 assists on the evening.
The Aggies are set to host the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24. Welcoming George Mason, Drake and UC Irvine, NM State first faces George Mason on Friday afternoon. The winner of the Drake/UCI meeting on Friday will determine who the Aggies play on the final day of the Classic on Saturday evening.
