EL PASO — It happened at an apartment complex on Edgemere. El Paso police say 27-year old Bobby Soto and 21-year old Lindsey Hradek allegedly placed their two month old son Colton in a car seat and placed him on the floor in one of the bedrooms. The car seat may have tipped over. The baby died while lying face down
At El Paso Childrens Hospital, we asked about the danger of car seats in the home.
Dr. Alfredo Maldonado tells Newschannel 9, "It's taking something like a car seat which is fantastic, it saves a ton of lives, and using it in a way that's inappropriate for what its to be used for"
Dr Maldonado cautions that the only correct choice is a crib designed to protect a baby in a home environment.
"You need to make sure that even if it's a few seconds, a few minutes that you place the baby in a place thats safe and secure, in their crib their bassinet, and make sure they're safe in a way that no accidents can happen"
The parents are charged with injury to a child. El PasoPD believes that drugs may also be a factor. They say Hradek and Soto used cocaine before the babys death.
Soto has a lengthy criminal record including Assault against a family member
