Come Spring 2014, El Pasoans will root for their own Triple A baseball team inside a brand new stadium. But how will El Paso foot the bill? Tourists, according to Proposition 3.
In total, El Paso hotels charge their guests 15.5% in taxes for their hotel/motel stays. Now, Proposition 3 will raise this 15.5% tax another 2%, making the new El Paso hotel/motel tax 17.5%. The 2% increase will go towards the stadium's construction.
Opponents argue raising taxes on hotel guests will turn them off to coming to El Paso. Others say the ballpark plan is a bad business deal all together and that the city was not open and honest with the public during the negotiation phase for the project.
