EL PASO — Winter is just around the corner, and as temperatures begin to drop, the El Paso Fire Department urges people to be safe when trying to stay warm.
Each winter season, firefighters respond to dozens of fires caused by space heaters and furnaces.
The El Paso Fire Department suggests contacting a professional before turning on furnaces for the winter.
"Of course I would recommend when you start up your furnace for this winter season, you get a licensed plumber out to check it out and make sure the fire box is good, it's fanning good and the burners are working correctly," said Battalion Chief James Fanning with the El Paso Fire Department.
