El Paso's rate of HIV and AIDS infections is relatively low for a city its size.
But even the approximately 1,700 HIV/AIDS cases are too many for International AIDS Empowerment in El Paso.
It is estimated that 25% more cases have not yet been reported because many people are still not getting tested.
That is why awareness is again the major emphasis of the 20th International AIDS Empowerment walk and the 2nd annual P.A.W.S 5K run on October 27th at Cohen Stadium.
"It's always better to know than not to know. At least now there is treatment out there and you can get treated and avoid it later from getting sick." said HIV counselor Javier Salinas
The walk raises money for local non-profits that provide education and support. Everything raised stays in the community.
