Freshman Anthony Rotich finished first at the 2012 NCAA Pre-National meet defeating 271 runners on Saturday.
Rotich clocked in a personal-best time of 23:01.00 in the men’s 8K race. The track All-American defeated Paul Chelimo, who was runner-up at the 2012 NCAA Track & Field Championships in the 5,000m run.
“I’m proud of how Anthony (Rotich) ran today,” said head coach Paul Ereng. “This was a very competitive meet and we are happy with how the team performed. This was a great victory for Anthony and we are excited for him.”
Freshman Elphas Maiyo also posted a personal best as he crossed the finish line with a time of 23:54.2 finishing 31st overall. Senior Elkana Rotich recorded a season-best of 24:16.1 as he was the 73rd runner to finish the race.
Sophomores Juan Blanco and Ramon Garcia registered times of 24:53.2 and 26:28.6, respectively. The Miners finished in 19th place out of 40 squads that competed.
In a close race, All-American Risper Kimayo took second place posting a time of 19:46.0 in the women’s 6K race. Senior Karina Garcia was the second Miner to cross the finish line for the team with a time of 21:40.9.
Duo Gladys Chepsat and Laura Delgado finished right behind each other clocking in times of 23:12.3 and 23:14.9, respectively.
The Miners will take some time off to prepare for the 2012 Conference USA Championships in Hattiesburg, Miss on Oct. 13.
