MONTANA VISTA — A SWAT situation in Montana Vista Thursday ends after 4 hours with the suspect dead, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said the man, identified by family as Rafael Lopez, 25, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"I could have gotten him out," said Lopez's father after deputies informed family of his death. "Me and my son were very close and we could have got him out but they didn't want to."
Lopez's father said he begged with deputies to let him to his son.
Deputies said he shot at deputies and a bail bondsman when they tried serving him a warrant earlier in the afternoon at the 10400 block of Marvin Lane.
Sheriff's said the deputies came to the door and identified themselves as law enforcement and that's when Lopez shot at them at least four times.
Nobody was hit by any of the shots.
Deputies said his wife and children ran out of the home right after the gunshots.
"She's with us so she's safe," said Chris Acosta, spokesperson for the sheriff's office. "They did exit the house right on time ."
After that is when Lopez barricaded himself inside the home.
His mother Dalia Lopez said she would have told her son to end it peacefully.
"I would told him to turn himself in," Lopez said "I'd rather see him alive."
