Six year old Isabelle was in PE class at yesterday afternoon when according to school officials, she told her teacher she wasn't feeling well. The teacher's aide escorted Isabelle to the nurse's office for a check up but the nurse wasn't there. That's when the little girl walked right off campus alone. It is unknown why the child was left unattended by the aide and not escorted back to class.
The girl was spotted at a roundabout, nearly a quarter mile away from school, by a neighbor who drove her home.
Janette had spoken to a counselor earlier that morning because her daughter had asked to stay home from school before. The counselor assured Janette that Isabelle would be safe.
Newschannel 9 spoke to Janette Mendoza today and she told us she has not heard from the school since the incident happened yesterday.
YISD released this statement to us today:
"YISD is committed to the safety and well-being of all our students. The district is conducting a thorough, ongoing investigation regarding the incident at Thomas Manor Elementary School. Appropriate action is being taken, including reviewing security measures and taking all necessary steps to ensure this does not happen again."
We also contacted the principal at Thomas Manor Elementary School today, Mr. Marcelino Franco, and he declined to comment on the matter.
