The UTEP volleyball team sweeps UCF, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) to earn their first Conference USA victory of the season on Friday.
Xitlali Herrera lead the Miners attack with 16 kills, 10 digs, three blocks (1s/2a) and a .560 hitting percentage. Setter Malia Patterson registered her fifth double-double of the season with 42 assists and 13 digs. While teammate Jeane Horton posted 13 kills and two block assists to top the Knights.
UTEP recorded 51 kills, 46 assists, 53 digs, eight team blocks and a .306 hitting efficiency against UCF.
UTEP jumps out to an early 3-1 lead with a pair of kills by Xitlali Herrera, but the Knights would battle back going on a 4-1 run to pull ahead of the Miners. UTEP stringed together a 4-1 run of their own taking a 14-11 lead and forcing UCF to take a timeout. With the set tied at 15-15, the Miners wasted no time going on a 8-1 run led by a kill and block by Bridget Logan. The senior struck again with another kill to seal the set, 25-18.
The Miners hammered four consecutive strikes to place UTEP ahead 6-2 making the Knights take a quick timeout. The Miners attack was unstoppable as Horton registered two kills and Jacqueline Cason added another to extend UTEP’s lead to 9-3. The Miners would lead by as much as eight before UCF would tie the frame, 19-19. UTEP would ultimately prevail with a 4-1 run with back-to-back kills by Herrera and Horton closing the set, 25-21.
UTEP took an 8-4 advantage at the beginning of the third frame with two straight kills by Cason and Herrera. The Miners went on a 5-1 run with another attack by Herrera to put UTEP up by seven points. Horton would help stretch the Miners lead with two consecutive kills and a block assist to pull ahead 18-8. The Knights would tally a 4-1 run to cut the Miners lead by four but UTEP would eventually conquer the match with a kill by Horton.
The Miners will finally return home to take on Southern Miss at 12 p.m. (MT) at Memorial Gym on Sunday.
