The New Mexico State men's tennis team opens its fall schedule as host of the Aggie Invitational this weekend beginning Friday at 9 a.m. MT at the NM State Tennis Complex.
The three-day individual tournament features a singles draw of over 30 players that begins on Friday. The 17-team doubles competition will also open on day one. Play will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. and conclude Sunday with the championship matches slated for 9 a.m.
Joining the Aggies on the courts this weekend will be players from four schools including Abilene Christian, Arizona, Northern Arizona and Western New Mexico. Three of the teams finished last season ranked nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) men's rankings. New Mexico finished the year at No. 61. Abilene Christian finished last season ranked No. 11 in Division II while WNMU ended the year at No. 32 in the same poll.
"This will be an informative tournament for us," said head coach Carlos Vargas. "I've seen our guys practice, now I'll be able to see them in competition. We're ready to play. I'm excited to get started with competition. I think this weekend will be fairly competitive."
NM State enters the season without the services of departed senior Matej Stakne who earned First Team All-WAC honors in 2012. Senior Luis Ramirez and junior Marc Westgate will lead the Aggies this season. The upperclassmen earned Second Team All-WAC honors last season as a doubles tandem playing in the No. 1 slot. NM State is a youthful squad this year with as many as six true freshmen on the fall roster.
