Junior Xitlali Herrera receives her first Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
“Our team made a concerted effort to improve in our defense last week,” said head coach Ken Murphy. “Xitlali (Herrera) worked very hard to make an impact with her blocking and defense and it was a big reason that we were able to raise our competitive level.”
The middle blocker was named to the Arkansas Invitational All-Tournament team after averaging 4.08 kills, 2.85 digs and 1.08 blocks per set. The junior recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 digs and 13 kills and added five blocks (1s/4a) as the Miners defeated Houston Baptist. Herrera led UTEP past Louisiana-Monroe registering 14 digs, two block assists and seven kills. The Mexican native didn’t stop there as she posted 13 kills, six digs, two block assists and hit .571 to setback Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Herrera closed the weekends action hammering a season-best 20 kills, five block assists, six digs and recorded a .485 hitting percentage.
UTEP will face C-USA opponent Tulane on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. (MT) at the 2012 Kathy Trosclair Memorial in New Orleans, La.
