EL PASO — A petition to repeal the demolition of city hall to make way for a new AAA baseball stadium is moving forward.
The city clerk's office confirmed nearly 1,600 signatures on the petition.
It asks for the June 26th decision to demolish City Hall to be repealed.
The question now goes to city council.
City representatives will decide whether to reject it, change the wording, or allow the petition to go to the voters.
Problem is, it can't be put on the November ballot because it's now past the deadline to do so.
That is why City Rep Susie Byrd says there's only one way to stop the demolition.
"And so really, in many ways, the impact of the petition would not likely sway the outcome, unless they're able to change the minds of some of the city council members that are participating in this decision," she said.
The issue will go to council on Sept. 18, along with the finalization of purchase plans to relocate city hall.
