There was lots of drama at Tuesday night's city council meeting in Socorro when council members say the mayor walked out of the meeting. Mayor Trini Lopez tells Newschannel 9 that he left after adjourning the meeting early because it was posted as a regular meeting. He says city charter requires that regular meetings be held the first Thursday of every month.
City Attorney Jerry Wallace told council members that the meeting was legal, despite the mayor's attempts to adjourn. The council proceeded to approve a $14.9 million budget which is a 12 percent increase from last year's spending plan.
