The UTEP volleyball team swept the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-14) victory on Monday night.
Junior Xitlai Herrera posted a match-high 13 kills and registered a .326 hitting percentage, while junior Jeane Horton hammered nine. Malia Patterson paced the offense with a match-high 31 assists and Victoria Valencia led the team with 12 digs.
The Miners recorded a .326 hitting percentage and totaled 42 kills, 42 digs, 40 assists and six team blocks.
UTEP jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the match and never looked back. The Lady Lions came within four in the first set, but the Miners got into the rhythm going on a 5-1 run. Back-to-back kills from Herrera gave UTEP a 23-14 lead. Valencia closed out the set for UTEP with an ace, 25-15.
The Lady Lions took an early lead to start the second stanza. However, UTEP used a 6-1 run to move ahead 14-11 forcing UAPB to call a timeout. UTEP extended the lead with back-to-back Lions attack errors and a kill by Horton, 18-13. The Miners were unstoppable and went on to secure the set, 25-18, with the aid of a kill and a block from Horton.
UTEP started the third frame with a 10-5 lead. The Miners went on a 4-1 run with a kill by senior Cassandra Burruel. The Lady Lions were unable to stop the Miners attack as Jacqueline Cason pounded the ball to extend the Miners lead once again to 20-12. UTEP sealed the set going on a 3-1 run with a kill by Madison Morris and a UAPB attack error.
The Miners are back in action Friday at 3:30 p.m. (MT) against Louisiana-Monroe in the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
