UTEP volleyball fell in five sets (25-23, 19-25, 11-25, 25-16, 13-15) to UTSA in the final day of the UTSA Classic in San Antonio, Texas.
Jeane Horton lead the Miners attack with 15 kills, three block assists and added five digs. Middle blocker Xitlali Herrera posted 10 kills, nine digs and six blocks (1s/5a) against the Roadrunners.
The Miners got off to an early start going on a 6-1 run with back-to-back attacks by Herrera and Horton setting the score at 7-4. UTEP was unstoppable with Taylor Nix blasting three consecutive kills to put the Miners up 14-7. The Roadrunners would not relent and came back from the deficit with a series of UTSA kills forcing a UTEP timeout at 17-16. Both team battled for control but UTEP ultimately prevailed with an attack by Cassandra Burruel to close the set at 25-23.
UTEP got in full swing at the beginning of the second frame going on a 4-0 run off of back-to-back UTSA attack errors by McKenzie Adams. The Roadrunners battled back with two Miner attack errors and took the lead, 9-8 forcing a UTEP timeout. A UTSA error, a kill by Burruel and Nix put the Miners on the board, 11-9. UTSA would not back down going on a 6-1 run to take the lead at 20-16. The Roadrunners took the frame with two kills and two UTEP attack errors.
After getting off to a slow start, UTEP bounced back with a kill by Horton and a block assist by Jacqueline Cason and Burruel. UTSA fought back with back-to-back Roadrunner kills giving UTSA an 18-8 lead in the frame. The Miners were unable to recover and the Roadrunners went on a 7-1 run to seal the frame 25-11.
UTEP wasted no time with Bridget Logan and Herrera registering consecutive kills to give the Miners a 4-1 advantage in the fourth frame. UTEP held on to the lead for the first half of the set until a kill by Brittney Malloy put UTSA within one. The Roadrunners would come close but UTEP would not relent with back-to-back kills by Horton and Burruel giving the Miners a 19-15 lead. UTEP went on a 4-1 run and Cason hammered the ball to close the set at 25-16.
UTEP struggled at the beginning of the fifth frame but went on a 4-1 run with two kills and a block assists by Horton to tie the frame at 8-8 forcing UTSA to call a timeout. Both teams battled for control of the set but two kills by Malloy gave the Roadrunners a 12-11 lead. UTEP was not capable of stopping the UTSA attack and fell, 15-13.
The Miners will take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday at 6 p.m. (MT) in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
