The Miners defeat Belmont, 3-0 earning their first victory of the season at the UTSA Classic on Friday.
Jeane Horton recorded a match-high, hammering 19 kills against the Bruins. UTEP registered 54 kills, 57 digs, 45 assists and posted a .299 hitting percentage to outlast Belmont in the first match of the UTSA Classic.
The Miners surged to a 4-1 advantage in the first set with three consecutive kills by Bridget Logan, Xitlali Herrera and Horton. UTEP was unstoppable going on a 5-1 run with a pair of kills from Horton putting the Miners up 14-8, forcing Belmont to call a timeout. UTEP would not let go of the lead for the remainder of the set forcing three Bruin errors to take the frame, 25-20.
Belmont took an early 4-1 lead in the second set, but the Miners showed resilience, bouncing back with four consecutive strikes by trio Herrera, Cassandra Burruel and Horton giving UTEP a 5-4 advantage. UTEP went on another 4-1 run with the help of Horton, who hammered the ball to put the Miners up 14-9. Jacqueline Cason gave the Miners an 18-14 lead with a kill and block assists. The bruins were unable to recover and Horton sealed the set with a kill.
UTEP wasted no time going on a 5-0 run with two kills by Horton, a kill by Burruel, an ace by Herrera and a Belmont error. The Miners capitalizing on the Bruins errors maintain the lead for the entire frame. Horton led the team in the third frame with five kills and two blocks. UTEP took the final set 25-21 with 17 kills, 12 assists and 20 digs.
The Miners will take the court again tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. (MT) versus host UTSA.
