LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Dona Ana County Vector Control gave away mosquito-eating gambusia fish at the Minnow Pond in Las Cruces Saturday.
Vector Control says they had about a hundred people stop by for the small fish.
"I didn't want to create problems for our neighbors so I thought we'd get the fish so we could keep the mosquito population down," said Larissa Chavez, who took her kids to pick up some gambusia for her water tanks at home.
The fish are environmentally friendly and can be placed in standing water.
Vector Control said the extra help from residents goes a long a way.
"It takes a lot of the workload off our back cause these fish eat a lot of larvae and they are being put in areas maybe we don't know about," said Bobby Guerrero who works with Vector Control.
Vector Control saw such a high turnout today they will continue to give away fish Monday and Tuesday morning from 7 to 9:30 at the Minnow Pond.
