EL PASO — Judge Frank Montalvo reconvened with Willie Gandara Sr.'s attorney Joe Spencer and the prosecution in court to discuss some of the evidence and the list of witnesses.
They spent about 45 minutes in Judge Frank Montalvo's court room for what is called a preadmissability hearing. They listened to the defense and prosecution go over the list of possible witnesses. Many of the witnesses on that list include former SISD board trustees.
They discussed reducing the number of pieces of evidence or documents they will present in trial, making sure they are admissable in court.
Attorney Joe Spencer said it was all part of the process so that everything can go as smoothly as possible.
"The trial will start on Sept.4th. They've reduced the number of exhibits from close to 3,000 to a little over 300, maybe reduced more," he said. "The number of witnesses has been reduced as well since Mr. Gandara is the only defendant in the lawsuit. Until we actually get into the battle in the courtroom."
The trial is expected to last six days.
Just last week, Gandara Sr.'s son, Willie Gandara Jr. pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking charges.
