New Mexico State men's tennis head coach Carlos Vargas announced the team's 2012-13 slate Wednesday, featuring a home schedule that includes the fall Aggie Invitational and seven home matches.
NM State kicks off its fall competition Sept. 21 at home as host of the Aggie Invitational. The three-day NM State tourney will feature players from rival New Mexico, Arizona, Northern Arizona, Abilene Christian and Western New Mexico.
A week later, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships highlight the schedule in Tulsa, Okla., Sept. 29 - Oct.7.
NM State will also send players to the Balloon Fiesta Invite hosted by rival UNM in Albuquerque, Oct. 5-7. The fall slate concludes with the ITA Mountain Regional Championship held in Las Vegas, Oct. 17-21.
"This fall will be a short season but it will give all of our guys a chance to gain experience and get ready for next year," said Vargas. "This year's schedule should give us an opportunity to test the level of all our new players.
"Not only do we have five returning players but we also have five new very talented young men joining our team. We are very excited for this upcoming season and look forward to improving on last year's record."
NM State opens its regular-season schedule for the fourth straight season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders and Aggies open the regular season Jan. 18 at the NM State Tennis Center.
Just over a week later the Aggies travel to Tucson for a pair of matches. NM State faces Grand Canyon on Jan. 26. GCU finished 2012 ranked No. 10 in Division II. The Aggies battle host Arizona a day later.
In early February, the Aggies return to Las Vegas to take on UC Riverside (Feb. 1), host UNLV (Feb. 2) and Southern Miss (Feb. 3). NM State travels to San Antonio to wrap up the first half of the schedule and begin Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play.
The Aggies play Texas-Pan American Feb. 9 before taking on WAC foe UTSA the following day. All six of the other WAC schools that sponsor men's tennis appear on the Aggies' schedule leading up to the conference championship tournament in Denver Apr. 25-28.
After a break, the Crimson and White welcomes Northern Arizona on March 1 to kick off a five-match home stand. NM State hosts its WAC home opener on March 3 against UT Arlington.
The NM State home stand continues a week later against Memphis on March 8. The Tigers finished last season at No. 35 in the final ITA rankings. The Aggies conclude the five-match stretch against Division II foes UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico on March 18-19. WNMU finished at No. 32 in the final ITA Division II rankings of 2012.
The Rio Grande Rivalry returns March 22 in Albuquerque as the Aggies travel north to battle the rival Lobos. The following week NM State travels to the Spokane, Wash. area for four matches.
The Aggies play four matches over five days beginning with Montana (March 27) and host Gonzaga (March 28) in Spokane. The men then travel to WAC opponent Idaho on March 29 before returning to GU to face Eastern Washington on March 31.
NM State entertains Denver on April 7 for its final home match to celebrate senior Luis Ramirez on Senior Day.
On the final road trip of the year, the Aggies travel to Logan, Utah, for their last two WAC matches of the regular season. NM State faces Seattle on April 12 and then serves against Utah State a day later.
