EL PASO — According to The American Kennel Club, pet thefts are on the rise.
The AKC says data from a seven month period in 2011 shows 224 dogs were reported stolen. That's compared to 150 reported stolen pets from the same time period the year before.
The AKC says you should never leave your pets outside unattended.
Pet owners we spoke to in West El Paso say they would be devastated if their dogs were stolen.
“I'd be very upset. I would assume they are not stealing the animal because they want to have a nice pet. They are probably stealing the animal to sell it, and I find that to be very prevalent here in El Paso, which is very sad,” said pet owner Carole Zarnik.
Experts say it's important to have your pet micro-chipped, and never buy a pet over the internet.
