Tim Johnson might be new to the El Paso Diablos, but he's not new to baseball. Having played in the Majors for several years, Johnson served as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, among other stops. On the eve of the City of El Paso's vote for a new downtown baseball stadium to lure a AAA baseball team to the city, Johnson says AA is much better brand of baseball than AAA.
"You know, Triple-A is a league that is a filler for some big leaguers, you are maybe going to get 2-3, you are not going to get 15-16 guys go to the big leagues from Triple-A. The big prospects in baseball are in Double-A at this time, and that's just the way it is."
It's no doubt that a new baseball stadium and team located in downtown El Paso would help spark the redevelopment downtown, but Johnson is not sure a new team, which would push the Diablos outside city limits, is not much better than the American Association, the league the Diablos play in now.
"I've had major leaguers come from AAA, AA, A and independent baseball. Yes, AAA is a good brand, but the star power is in AA, and I think AA is just as good, maybe better."
