(CNN) — A shooting at a Seattle cafe and an apparent carjacking have left two men and a woman dead, and three others severely wounded, police reported Wednesday.
Two men were killed at a coffeehouse in the city's University District, while a woman died in the carjacking near downtown, Seattle police said. Three more people -- another two men and a woman -- were in critical condition after being shot at the coffeehouse, they said.
Investigators were looking for any connections between the two incidents, which happened about four miles and a few minutes apart, police spokesmen said.
"We're definitely in a dynamic situation right now," Deputy Police Chief Nick Metz told reporters. Investigators did not know whether the gunman knew any of the victims, he said.
The black sport-utility vehicle taken in the carjacking was found empty a few miles southwest of downtown, Assistant Chief Mike Sanford said.
Heavily armed police were using dogs to search the neighborhood around the cafe early Wednesday afternoon, neighbors said.
"The streets are blocked off, and there's tons of cops," said Joe Backus, the manager of a musical-instrument shop next to Café Racer, where the shootings took place. Police told employees and customers to stay inside while the search was going on, he said.
And nearby resident Evan Hill said he could hear the gunfire from his living room.
"I counted four or five shots and somebody shouting, and I ran out to my balcony and called 911," Hill told CNN affiliate KOMO.
Hill called the cafe a "very mellow" venue that hosts artwork and musical performances.
"It makes you kind of angry that it would happen in a place like that," he said.
