EL PASO — Just days ago, he had the life most students dream of. High honors at his high school and a full ride to Princeton in fall.
That student, 18-year-old Armando Garcia is in federal custody on child pornography charges.
Federal agents raided Garcia's west El Paso home and seized computers on which Garcia allegedly downloaded child pornography.
Federal agents say Garcia is guilty of downloading and viewing sexually explicit pictures of children.
Nothing could be a bigger surprise to teachers, who tell Newschannel 9 that Garcia is the perfect student with a passion for music and performance.
He's an accomplished violinist in El Paso High's orchestra and an academic genius, scoring near perfect marks on his SAT exam which provided him a full ride scholarship to Princeton.
"There's no profile for this type of violator. Our agents, HSI special agents have arrested 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 year olds on child pornography cases,” said Homeland Security Investigation’s Leticia Zamarripa.
Garcia's house is down the street from a park. Parents there say you can never be too safe when it comes to protecting your children.
“I think parks should be, especially so close to this park. We as parents should pretty concerned about leaving our kids alone at the park,” said parent Daniel Fuentes.
“It's scary actually, that we can't even come to the park without knowing you know that it's safe. Much less having someone up the street doing something they shouldn't be doing regarding children,” said parent Jessica Melendez.
Parents say child pornography is a serious problem in The Borderland and should not be taken lightly.
Homeland Security Investigations says they need your help reporting anyone who is viewing or distributing child pornography.
Armando Garcia remains behind bars.
